Hohoho.
I went to watch Spiderman 3 with my cousin today. ((And am currently chionging(sp??) layouts assignment now. :>))
Personally, I don't think it is really good. I think the best was Spiderman 1. I don't want to talk much about why I don't think it's all that good; mostly I just disliked having so many things being cramped into that one show ((lack of focus)) though I suspect it may be because they wanted some sort of 'closure' for this movie; didn't want to leave behind any more plotholes.
Anyway, I said I don't want to talk much about that show. So, I'll get to the main point of this post?
So I found this magazine in a shop; and it is actually a comics magazine done by Singaporeans, published in Singapore, called Fresh Mode. (Official Site) I'm actually a--what do you call it--supporter of local brands, local products, local publishing. So, there was this rush of patriotic pride all of a sudden and I immediatelly bought the magazine. (It costs $6.90. My wallet burns.)
I was a little disappointed when I flipped through the magazine.MY $6.90!!!! It is most definitely very amateurish. The contents were very lacking; it's not really worth $6.90. ((Okay, I admit, it's because of that $6.90 that gets to me.)) Though I think it could be because the printing quality and paper were rather high. ((They should consider this if they plan to produce future issues. Their budget would be a huge problem.))
And the story (main comic in the magazine) was... cliché. Something about Gods and Demons. The story takes place in Singapore. That is one redeeming factor in it. And the main character is this handsome(???) guy, who has a sad, terrible, emo!!! past... yea. Well. At least it was still entertaining. So I'll hold my opinions of it for now.
But I guess you can't expect much from the first issue, and the first comics magazine to be published in Singapore. I could consider them pioneers ((Should this market take flight in Singapore)) and I admire their courage to be the first to finally step out and produce something. This manga/comics/anime/whatever has been very popular in Singapore in recent years, and I've heard so many people say they were interested in this line of 'work', but it was all talk but no action. ((Of course, they didn't really have themoney!! capital and connections to start.)) So I feel that this Fresh Mode could be the start of something big(?) here.
One thing that I like about this is that they didn't try to imitate existing magazines in, say, Japan or America. It has it's own 'Singaporean' flavour, and makes me feel all patriotic all over again. ((I am so easily influenced.)) It actually kind of reminds me of 'Young Generation'. Remember?? Remember this magazine you used to buy and read when you were in Primary school?? :)))
There's something that bugs me, though. This magazine seems as if it's targeted towards Secondary school students. It really gives me those kind of vibes. o.o Also, why do I feel as if this magazine was done by a group of Secondary School students for a project in their school????? I don't get it.
Maybe it's just me.
I'm kind, so I'll give this a 3 out of 5 stars. I just hope that should they produce another issue, the pricing wouldn't be affected by the GST shifting. I'm not sure if I will continue buying it. Maybe if I feel rich at that time.
Best of luck, crew of Fresh Mode!
[Edit]: I forgot to mention, I saw Shawn Paul Tan's cosplay photo in the magazine. Haha. His costume was nice?
[Edit 2:] There is just something terribly satisfying about seeing that little penguin mood icon giggling.
